Croatian Medicine Prescriptions Now Valid in Four Other EU Countries

Croatian medicine prescriptions have now become valid in four other EU countries. The cross-border health network of the European Union should be fully operational by 2025.

The e-Prescription issued in Croatia is now valid in four countries of the European Union, and from 2025 it will be valid in all of them, writes Poslovni (Večernji).

The Spanish Ministry of Health informed its citizens this week that the Spanish have included all their autonomous communities in the cross-border health network of the European Union called the E-Health Network. They specifically mentioned Croatia as one of several EU member states where Croatian doctors can access the health records of Spanish citizens. Likewise, if they find themselves in Croatia, Spanish citizens can use their e-prescriptions to pick up medicine in Croatian pharmacies.

Croatia has long been part of the EU cross-border health network system, so doctors in Portugal, the Czech Republic, Luxembourg, France, Malta, and Spain can access data on patients from Croatia. They have been able to reach basic data from their medical records for some time, in case Croatian citizens in those countries request unplanned health care.

Croatian citizens traveling to Finland, Estonia, Portugal, and Spain can currently only pick up medicine in these four countries at their pharmacies via Croatian medicine prescriptions issued by their family doctors in Croatia. The cross-border health network of the European Union should be fully operational by 2025.

When it comes to Croatian citizens and health insurers, the possibility of picking up medicine abroad and retrieving essential medical documentation is available only to people who have given consent for such an exchange through the Croatian Health Portal, which is an integral part of the Croatian electronic service e-građani. Without such permission, Croats cannot pick up their Croatian medicine prescriptions outside of Croatia.
