Free Train Rides in Croatia for Pensioners and People Over 65

Pensioners and people over the age of 65 will enjoy free train rides in Croatia all throughout 2024. To exercise this privilege, they’ll need a Croatian Railways (HŽPP) smart card and a free travel profile that can be purchased at the HŽ cash desk for 2.65 euros.

As 24Sata writes, Croatian Railways (HŽPP) is launching a pilot project that will give pensioners and those over the age of 65 the right to free and unlimited use of rail transport in Croatia.

The pilot project will be implemented throughout the year 2024. Pensioners and people over the age of 65 can exercise the right to free transportation based on the HŽ Putnički Prijevoz smart card and the purchased profile at a price of 2.65 euros. In order to exercise the right to a profile, a pensioner must present a certificate of receipt of a HZMO pension and an identification document, and a person over 65 years of age must present an identification document.

Pensioners and people over the age of 65 who have a smart card of HŽ Putnički Prijevoz should buy a free travel profile at the cash desk for a price of 2.65 euros, which will be valid until the end of 2024.

New users of free transport will need to fill out an application for the creation of a smart card, which they can acquire at the ticket office or download from the HŽ website. The request and the necessary documentation about pension or age should be submitted at the cashier’s office or via e-mail. The smart card is created within 7 days from the submission of the request and collected at the cash desk where the request was submitted. Applications for the creation of a smart card will be open from December 18, 2023.
