COOL YOUR HOME AND DRINK PLENTY OF FLUIDS
High air temperature can cause health problems, especially for sensitive groups such as small children, chronic patients, the elderly and people who work outdoors. That is why it is recommended for everyone to protect themselves from extreme heat – when they go out, they must protect themselves or stay away from the heat, cool down their home and drink enough fluids.
As a result of the high temperatures, the possibility of heat stroke increases, especially for people with health problems, warns the Croatian Institute of Public Health (HZJZ). Chronic patients, especially those suffering from cardiovascular diseases, people over 65, children, outdoor workers, athletes, soldiers… are at the greatest risk.
HZJZ says that adequate measures should be taken during extreme heat, including avoiding exposure to direct sunlight and going out during the hottest part of the day. It is recommended to consume enough fluids, i.e. non-carbonated water or low-calorie drinks without caffeine, alcohol and sugar, wear light clothes and headgear, eat small meals with fresh fruits and vegetables and shower with lukewarm water.
It is equally important to adjust the temperature of the room where you are staying. When using air conditioning, care should be taken that the required temperature is not lower than seven degrees Celsius than the outside temperature. It is also dangerous to leave children or animals in a parked vehicle during hot weather. During the period of extreme heat, it is important to adhere to the recommendations of local health institutions and warnings about heat waves, emphasized the HZJZ.
